D19 – Proficiency in First Aid aboard Ship

Scope (Target audience):
<\/strong>D19 – Proficiency in First Aid aboard Ship has been designed to meet the requirements of STCW<\/a> section VI\/4-1 and is based on the guidelines of IMO<\/a> Model Course 1.14. Course is open to all seafarer who are designated to provide medical first aid on board ship.<\/p>


Objective:
<\/strong>After successful completion of the course the trainees will be competent to apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board, identify and treat medical emergencies, treat dislocations, fractures, muscular injuries, neck, head and spinal injuries and control bleeding.<\/p>


Course content:
<\/strong>Immediate action
First aid kit
Body structure and functions
Toxicological hazards aboard ship
Examination of patient
Spinal injuries
Burns, scalds and effects of heat and cold
Fractures, dislocations and muscular injuries
Medical care of rescued persons, including distress, hypothermia and cold exposure
Radio medical advice
Pharmacology
Sterilization
Cardiac arrest, drowning and asphyxia
Psychological\/Psychiatric problems
Review and assessment<\/p>
